Yesterday we headed to SLC again. Kell went with me this time. Thank goodness for sisters. Brad figured it would be more helpful if he stayed home with the other kids so I am not worrying about the home front. We headed out about 6:45 am. Livee travelled much better this round. No actual throwing up this time. She slept most of the way there. She had a few moments of grabbing the barf bucket but she got threw it ok. The hospital was a ghost town and traffic was really nice because it was Saturday. I started getting my pit in my stomach about 10:30. That's about when we started walking in the hospital. It just fills me with anxiety knowing they are going to touch her foot and that it is going to hurt. The first thing the nurse did was take her vitals which included her blood pressure, heart rate, and temp. She then unwrapped and wiped off her foot with some wipes. Surprisingly Livee stayed super calm through that. She was squeezing my finger off, but there was no screaming. Next the physical therapist came in and looked at it unwrapped. Then the main lady came in to check her progress. She said it looks really great. Everything is turning pink. She helped clean off some skin that was dead. This is when Livee started to get upset because it involves scissors. It was all dead skin, but it is scary when scissors are coming at her. She cut off some blisters that were on her toes and tried to get some of the white skin that is on her toes. It was detached from her body underneath and I could feel it was dead skin. So after getting skin off, she then showed me the new way to wrap it. Instead of the Silvadine cream, we are now using an ointment similar to neosporin. Rub that on and then we cut pieces of this thin mesh that is oily and lay it on her skin, and in between her toes. It really keeps her new skin that is growing moist. We then wrap it with the gauze and put the mesh sock on. We now only have to wash it once a day. We also can cut back on the narcotic medicine to wash time and ibuprofen the rest of the time.
After it was all wrapped up, the PT came in and worked with her foot for about 10 minutes. Really showed me how to get aggressive with out her freaking out. I asked why she complained that it burns when I hold her with her feet dangling vs me scooping her up under knees. She said that her adult burn patients say that it gets a throbby burny feeling when they put it down to walk but will subside after they start walking. That makes sense. They hooked us up with all our supplies and sent us on our way to come back on Friday.
That was it. We weren't quite ready to go home yet so we decided to make a couple stops. Centerville has an In-and-Out Burger and Livee was wanting French Fries and I haven't ever been there. It was LOADED with people, but we fought the crowds and got us a table. It was yummy. After lunch we headed over to Target. My birthday is in a couple days and I have been eyeing a Kindle Fire. My husband gave me the ok so I got to pick one up. Happy Birthday to me.
We then decided to stop at the new Gordman's on the Lagoon exit. It is a fun store. We didn't end up buying anything, but they had super duper cute clothes that were pretty reasonable prices. I see more stops there in our future trips.
We pulled into Burley around 6. We stopped and grabbed Kell's kids. I saw her mother in law and she came and just gave me the biggest warmest hug and said she is so sorry we had to go through this. I think this is why I have been avoiding a lot because I kind of lost it. I got all emotional about and shed a few tears. There is nothing wrong with crying but I just hate doing it front of people. It seems so silly to me, but she was so sincere with words that it really touched my heart.
I let Livee play with Tate for a bit at their house. She said her bum was tired of sitting. Tate had this fun game that hooks up to the tv. It is a bike that you sit on and pedal to control the games. I told Livee she should get on and give it a try. She hopped on and just started pedaling-with both feet. It took everything in me to not say anything. I wanted to tell her to be careful, watch out for your foot. But I knew that would just freak her out. It doesn't have any resistance so it probably didn't have a lot of weight on it, but the motion her foot was making will be incredible therapy. Tate was super nice and said we could borrow it for a bit. She LOVES it. We came home and she played it for quite some time.
I worried about her not sleeping well because she only had Motrin in her, but she did fine. I still gave her Motrin through the night. I am not ready to chance it yet. Maybe a few more days.
We got up this morning and got her good meds in her so we could get ready for a wash. We made her favorites of pancakes while we waited for the medicine to kick in. I am hoping she will get an appetite back now that we are cutting her meds back.
Wash time went ok. She took a bath first. We are working towards her taking the wrap off and then just bathing her foot with her body. So I didn't protect her foot much from getting in the water. Her wrap was still on. I told her it was ok if it got wet. She splashed a few times trying to be funny. So hopeful soon she will be ok with that. It took twice as long to wash her foot. The oily mesh stuck to her deeper sections on the inside and the outside. This is where the bath would soak it and help it come off easier. I just used a cup and poured it on to get it all wet and soft. That took a bit longer. The cutting of the strips takes time. Brad was cutting while I put them on. She was crying this time because it hurt on her thigh. She is so busy trying to hold it up that her leg gets a cramp in it. Hopefully soon she will trust just resting it on the counter top. She does during the day, but when the wrap is off she is super protective of her foot. I don't blame her.
I had ointment all over my arms by the time we were done. It is a bit messier, but her foot is doing so much better. I am truly amazed every day as to how much it heals. She really hates me to take pictures of it so they tend to be a bit blurry, but oh well. I love my little Livee and how brave she is. I also love my family and friends for how supportive they have been. It would be hard without them.
